Canyon Wesley Florey - Adventure Photographer and Graphic Designer
As a kid I grew up in the mountains of Montana in a crazy earth ship house made by my parents out of recycled wood and bottles. Since we didn't have a television and my mom was an art major, I spent most of my time creating artwork and playing in the woods. As an adolescent, I began hiking, rafting and skiing with my dad, the guy who had taken me along stuffed in his backpack before I could even walk. Our family trips were anything but boring. Most included skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, multi-day rafting trips, backpacking, rock climbing, and everything in between that there is to do in the great outdoors. At the age of 8, I picked up a manual 35mm Canon camera and learned how to use a light meter. That's where it all began...
At 18 I moved to Lake Tahoe, an outdoor enthusiast's playground. I decided that I would buy a Macintosh computer, and create a magazine about snowboarding, music, and art. I shot the majority of photos, wrote most of the content, sold advertising, handled layout, and pre-press amongst other things. I teamed up with a few friends and helped to start a snowboard video production company that worked with the magazine. After two years of shooting, writing and managing the magazine, I felt a shift coming.
I came across a great deal on some screen printing equipment and set up a shop in my garage. Before long I was making t-shirts and designs for local businesses. I partnered up with another local screen printer and together we formed STEPFIVE Designs. After two years we outgrew the garage space and decided to upgrade to a commercial shop space. We developed a niche with creative designs for garments that one-upped the competition. Soon we were helping ski resorts with their apparel and marketing materials. In the spring of 2007 I sold the business and used the profits to buy the camera of my dreams and pursue traveling and photography.
Since then I have traveled the Americas in search of adventure, taking photos along the way. I have worked on a boat in Panama, been a Helicopter / Glacier Hiking Guide in South East Alaska, and shot professional photos during the production of "My Own Two Feet" a human powered adventure snowboard film. I have learned from my friends and from my past experiences that there is nothing that I can't do if put my mind to it. Once again, I'm putting my mind to it...
My goal with photography is to inspire people to get outside and enjoy the outdoor elements. To make a connection with nature that they may not have previously had, thus inspiring people to take action towards environmental conservation. I want my images to appeal to the youth, and to inspire kids to learn about environmental preservation through adventure and outdoor sports. The youth is our future.
